Design and build team unite for Manchester free school

Flagship primary free school to provide a new home for school operating out of temporary accommodation

Work to build a new flagship primary school in Ancoats, near Manchester city centre, is underway.

Commissioned through the Education Funding Agency (EFA), the New Islington Free School will provide much-needed space and a permanent, purpose-built home for the primary school, which is currently operating out of three temporary cabins on a nearby disused car park.

The new two-form entry school will accommodate 420 pupils and more than doubles the current footprint of the Ofsted ‘outstanding’ school.

The main contractor is Conlon Construction, with architecture, building surveying and town planning practice, Cassidy + Ashton supporting the project throughout the detailed design and build programme.

The school will comprise 14 classrooms, a sports hall, dining room, kitchen and reception play area. It is being built off site using modular construction methods to ensure the facility is ready for occupation in September 2016.

Michael Conlon, chairman at Conlon Construction, said: “New Islington is a major regeneration area and we’re pleased to be doing our bit to transform the landscape and provide a facility that will better serve families in the locality.”

Alistair Baines, chairman at Cassidy + Ashton, added: “This project will transform a derelict site less than half a mile away from the school’s current location to create a bespoke new home that will house modern facilities for pupils and staff.”
