Smith’s Wood Sports College in Solihull joined Birmingham-based Fairfax Multi-Academy Trust (FMAT) on 1st April, 2017.

It is the fourth academy to join FMAT since its inception in July 2014. FMAT also sponsors three academies in Birmingham - Fairfax, in Sutton Coldfield, Erdington Academy in Erdington, and Bournville School in Bournville.

Andy Bird, CEO of Fairfax Multi-Academy Trust, said: "We are thrilled that Smith's Wood Sports College has joined our family of academies.

"Together with Principal Katy Craig, and with the support from our leading educationalists working across our Trust, we will work tirelessly to raise standards and to provide all students with the education they deserve.

"I am fully committed to ensuring Smith's Wood Sports College can deliver the outstanding education I know it is capable with the help of the Trust’s expertise, commitment and leadership."

Katy Craig, Principal of Smith’s Wood Sports College said: “We are delighted to have joined Fairfax Multi-Academy Trust, an important milestone in the history of Smith’s Wood Sports College.

From the outset we have felt a great synergy with FMAT and we believe being part of its family of academies will bring fantastic opportunities for students, staff and the wider community - Katy Craig, Principal of Smith’s Wood Sports College

“From the outset we have felt a great synergy with FMAT and we believe being part of its family of academies will bring fantastic opportunities for students, staff and the wider community.

“The Trust is already proving a great support to Smith’s Wood Sports College and, importantly, we share the same vision, values and ethos.

“We look forward to a bright future as FMAT and Smith’s Wood Sports College continue in our relentless efforts to raise aspirations and improve academic achievement.

“I want to thank our staff, students and parents for their continued support.”

FMAT is growing a reputation for leading school improvement, having previously been instrumental in seeing Kingsbury School and Sports College – now Erdington Academy – being removed from special measures by education watchdog Ofsted in November 2015.

In September 2016, it also opened a new primary provision at Bournville School in a bid to assist Birmingham City Council in its efforts to address a shortage of primary places in south Birmingham.

The ‘all-through’ academy now serves students aged four to 16 and this month appointed new Head of Academy Joanne Cottle – who helped Trinity High School in Redditch go from ‘National Challenge’ in 2009 to becoming ‘Most Improved Secondary School in England’ in 2013.
