Forum thinking at Education Building Forum

This year's Education Building Forum focuses on tackling the major defects in the school estate

Now in its eighth year the education building forum combines an informative seminar programme sharing best practice and business meetings with the most innovative suppliers, as well as extensive opportunities to network and make valuable connections. Each year it brings together local authorities, school leaders from both public and private sectors, project managers, architects, contractors and other senior level professionals looking to enhance their schemes and improve their supply chain.

If you are actively working on projects then you are eligible to attend as a complimentary project delegate which includes executive accommodation, an exclusive project delegate networking drinks reception, all meals and refreshments, as well as a superb gala dinner on the Thursday evening.

This year’s theme for the CPD-certified seminars is: ‘Tackling the major defects in the school estate’. Most of the school estate is more than 40 years old and the continued deterioration in the condition of our school buildings represents a substantial risk to long-term value for money. The cost of returning all school buildings to ‘satisfactory or better’ condition is estimated to be somewhere in the region of £6.7bn, according to the DfE’s property data survey with defects that go unrepaired likely to cost more to address in the future.

This year’s speakers include Craig Nimmo, Estates Bursar at King’s School, Canterbury and IID Architects who will be talking about master planning as a means of tackling major defects in the school estate.*

Topics that are up for discussion include: 

● Assessing the condition of school buildings.  

● Funding streams, frameworks and programmes.

● Refurbish or demolish?

● The role of modern methods of construction.

● Setting priorities and targets.

The Education Building Forum is the only event of its kind that brings together education estates with the entire supply chain, as one of the previous project delegates commented, “Education Building Forum has challenged my thinking on the procurement and development of educational buildings and I have made useful contacts both on the project and supplier delegate side.” 

Held over one and a half days, the forum experience is a time-efficient way of staying abreast of the latest thinking and establishing valuable business connections.  One delegate summed it up by saying, “I think the real benefit of the Education Building Forum is that everyone gets away from the day job, allowing an opportunity to meet people that you may not otherwise meet. It allowed me to understand innovations that I may not have otherwise known about and make connections with other delegates. Also, as it overlapped with The Physical Activity Facilities Forum, it added another valuable dimension.” 

The organisers, Stable Events, specialise in the built environment and facilitated over 4,000 business meetings last year through their forum programme.
