Midland Expressway Ltd (MEL), operators of the M6toll road, have announced this years’ winners of their Schools Foundation Scheme.  The winners of this year’s award are: Chasetown Community School, Springhill Primary Academy, Five Ways Primary School, Brownhills West Primary School and St Peter’s C.E. Primary Academy in Stonnal.

The MEL Schools Foundation panel has awarded five grants of £3,000 to primary schools in the West Midlands and Staffordshire area.  The scheme’s objective is to enhance learning and nurture talent through funding IT equipment, sports equipment, outdoor classrooms and more. All primary schools located within a five-mile radius of the M6toll corridor were invited to apply for their generous grant.

Colin Mabey, IT & Systems Director at MEL, said, “Each year our Schools Foundation Scheme goes from strength-to-strength as we are able to invest in the futures of local, young people.  Having visited each of the schools that we’ve previously donated to, we know that every penny has been well spent on things that the children simply would not have access to otherwise”.

This is the sixth year that the Schools Foundation initiative has been in operation.  To date MEL has donated £63,000 which has helped schools fund a range of different projects, including: interactive white boards, forest school sites, sound and presentation systems, outdoor learning areas, sports equipment and library facilities to name just a few.

This year’s winning projects, selected by the MEL’s team, include: poly-tunnels to enable pupils to grow produce all year round, Lego WeDo Robotics kits and iPad mini’s as part of a scheme to encourage pupils to see the value in engineering, a forest school area, outdoor gym equipment and a bus converted into a library space.

Rachel Mander, Headteacher at Five Ways Primary School, one of the winners of this year’s MEL grant said, “The £3000 that we have been awarded from the MEL Schools Foundation Scheme will provide a much needed outdoor area at Five Ways Primary School, where we can bring nature into school and promote ‘thinking outside the box’ for pupils.  Pupils will learn to treat nature with respect by growing their own plants and vegetables and will gain a greater understanding of where their food comes from and the conditions needed for plant growth.  Five Ways promotes healthy living and consideration for the environment and we are very excited to include this area into our school grounds where it will be enjoyed by pupils for many years to come”.

Full details regarding the Midland Expressway Ltd’s Schools Foundation Scheme, together with the qualifying criteria and application processes of both schemes for next year’s applications are available on the M6toll website.
