Two female pupils from Erdington Academy have been selected to take part in a programme aimed at encouraging pupils to gain more experience in the engineering industry.

The six week pre-apprenticeship programme hosted by Jaguar Land Rover was offered to ten year 11 pupils at the academy, which is run by Fairfax Multi-Academy Trust

The programme offered pupils the opportunity to learn invaluable work skills including time management, independent learning and team work as well as an introduction into the automotive, manufacturing and engineering industry.

All 10 pupils were provided with transport from Jaguar Land Rover to the Castle Bromwich site, where, for one hour a week, they were expected to work alongside Jaguar Land Rover apprentices.

Niyah Badley and Mariam Ismail passed the difficult assessment stage required for pupils to be considered for the programme whilst maintaining their grades and compulsory school work.

Niyah Bradley aged 15, said: “I really enjoyed getting to see how certain machinery is used for different things. We were given tasks and it was up to us to get them completed by a certain time, so it was nice having that independence.”

Mariam Ismail aged 16, said: “It was exciting to be in a workplace and see how everyone values what you say. Our work was always appreciated and the mentors gave really helpful feedback and advice.”

This programme is a unique opportunity for pupils to get an insight into the real world of work, where they are able to pick up essential life skills that will prepare them for their future - Elizabeth Cross, Assistant Headteacher at Erdington Academy

Elizabeth Cross, Assistant Headteacher at Erdington Academy said: “This programme is a unique opportunity for pupils to get an insight into the real world of work, where they are able to pick up essential life skills that will prepare them for their future.

“It is wonderful to see Niyah and Mariam show such enthusiasm towards an industry that is traditionally seen as a male-orientated. I’m proud that Erdington Academy pupils are helping to break down those barriers and excel through this programme that is exclusively for our academy.

“I would like to thank Jaguar Land Rover for the support and guidance they provided all our pupils and I look forward to many more enrichment opportunities for our pupils in the future.”

Jamie Whitehead, Jaguar Land Rovers Operation’s Director for Castle Bromwich said: "Jaguar Land Rover needs more engineers to help our growing business.

Our 'Inspiring Tomorrow's Education' school education programme works in partnership with schools and colleges across the UK to promote engagement in STEM subjects and encourage more youngsters, both male and female to consider engineering careers, which are well paid and offer excellent career progression. We were delighted pupils from Erdington Academy enjoyed the programme and now plan to apply to our apprenticeship programme in the future."
