The teaching exchange is to help teachers introduce Mastery into UK schools

Two primary school teachers from Shanghai have arrived in the UK for a two week period to teach Maths at Mangotsfield CE Primary School, which is part of the NEXUS Teaching School Alliance, in South Gloucestershire. This visit has been organised by the Boolean Maths Hub.

Shanghai teachers Melody and Lin will be working with and teaching alongside Abby Watkins, a Maths Mastery Specialist and Year 6 teacher from Mangotsfield Primary. Abby was one of a party of 70 expert Maths teachers from schools across the country, who went on a research visit to Shanghai schools in November last year.

The exchange is part of a long-term project, run within the Maths Hubs programme, to help teachers in English schools introduce Mastery approaches to teaching Maths in their schools. Teachers from across the region have been invited to take part in lesson observations so that they can witness this best practice in action.

This is the third exchange of its type and is being run as part of the National Maths Hubs programme, funded by the DfE, and coordinated by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). In previous years Shanghai teachers visited academies within the Cabot Learning Federation.

Abby Watkins Maths Mastery Specialist said, “I have learnt a great deal, both from being in Shanghai myself and seeing Lin teaching in my class. I am confident that both the children here and teachers from across the region will benefit greatly from this amazing experience.”
