The ATT Teaching Awards 2017 winners

Teachers honoured at ATT Teaching Awards 2017

The award ceremony commended the teachers for their outstanding achievements

To celebrate excellence in teaching, 22 teachers have received recognition for their outstanding achievements at Academy Transformation Trust’s second annual Teaching Awards held in Birmingham.

Teachers and staff from 13 of The Trust’s family of academies were recognised across the spectrum from early years to further education; from academic and vocational subjects to PSHE and welfare. Caroline Lewis of Star Academy Sandyford in Stoke-on-Trent and Richard Evans of Iceni Academy in Methwold were voted for by pupils as recipients of the ATT Pupil Ambassadors’ Award. A further 23 teachers were highly commended for their achievements.

Winners include a tutor whose vision and innovation has secured jobs for pupils whilst making a difference to dementia patients’ lives; an NQT who accelerated from teaching assistant to middle leader in three years; and a primary teacher whose passion for Humanities sees historical events recreated in the academy.

For a unique approach to engaging pupils in Health and Social Care, Mary Robbins from Pool Hayes Academy in Willenhall received the ATT Innovation Award. By creating links with a dementia charity and the dementia unit at a local hospital, Mary has inspired sixth form pupils who now all regularly volunteer to support patients and their families. Although this contributes to their BTEC work, they are also making a transformative difference to lives. Because of Mary’s vision and ingenuity every one of the pupils has received a job offer for when they complete their studies.

Christopher Kemp at Mark Hall Academy in Harlow was named the ATT NQT Award winner. Since joining the academy as a teaching assistant in September 2014, Christopher fast-tracked through his teacher training and, after enrolling as an NQT in April 2016, is now recognised as an outstanding practitioner and middle leader at the academy. Christopher received his award for consistently showing excellence in the classroom, making outstanding progress in meeting and exceeding the NQT and teacher standards, and for the level of confidence and reliability he brings to both his classroom and pastoral role.

In one of the subject awards, Neil Smith at Sun Academy Bradwell received the ATT Humanities Award. Neil was recognised for his passion and determination in teaching humanities, his efforts in securing professional development from top historical and geographical societies, and his tireless work for the environment which has engaged the academy with its local community. An outstanding feature of Neil’s nomination was his creativity in simulating historical experiences which has included having pupils recreate Roman battles using personally designed shields and authentic army tactics, and watching ‘The Beatles’ perform and cheering in the same way as the crowds would have done in the sixties.

The awards honour the talents and impact of some of The Trust’s hundreds of teachers and support staff who give every pupil the very best opportunity to reach their full potential by transforming achievements, aspirations and opportunities. GL Assessment and ABSOTeach supported the conference and awards.

Our teachers and support staff work exceptionally hard in an increasingly challenging profession yet demonstrate commitment, determination and passion in supporting pupils to be the best they can be - Ian Cleland, Chief Executive Officer at Academy Transformation Trust

Ian Cleland, Chief Executive Officer at Academy Transformation Trust commented: “It was a tremendous occasion to celebrate the excellent contribution of our staff to the work of our academies by recognising their achievements in the presence of our Principals and senior leaders at our annual conference. The awards added a real feeling of celebration to the evening of the conference and all concerned enjoyed the event. Our teachers and support staff work exceptionally hard in an increasingly challenging profession yet demonstrate commitment, determination and passion in supporting pupils to be the best they can be.

"I was delighted to be able to present the awards to each of the winners who had made such a valued contribution to the work of The Trust and the achievement of its pupils. It seems to me that the awards represent the tip of a very large iceberg where all of our staff make such a huge, shared contribution to our ethos.”

Sarah Haythornthwaite, Director at GL Assessment said: “We’re thrilled to support the ATT Teaching Awards 2017 and play a part in recognising the successes of teachers across The Trust who are making such a difference. We have enjoyed working in partnership with ATT over the last few years, in our own way trying to support their vision of helping pupils reach their potential, and we are delighted to celebrate their achievements over the last this year. Congratulations to everyone who has been recognised in the Teaching Awards 2017.”
