Team GB Brownlee Brothers & Aldi help young people eat fresh

1.2 million young people to improve eating habits via educational programme, Get Set to Eat Fresh

Olympic athletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee have joined forces with Aldi to pledge their support for Get Set to Eat Fresh, an ambitious educational programme aiming to improve the eating habits of 1.2 million young people in the UK by 2020. The programme sets out to tangibly improve the eating habits of at least three in four of all participating children.

First launched in October 2015 by the British Olympic Association (BOA) and Aldi, Get Set to Eat Fresh is a nationwide education programme for young people aged 5-14 years-old. The programme is brought to life by Team GB athletes and inspires students about the benefits of healthy eating by developing the skills required to cook fresh, healthy food.
 Get Set to Eat Fresh builds on the success of Get Set, the official youth engagement programme of Team GB and ParalympicsGB.

Commenting on the partnership, Alistair Brownlee said: 
“We’re incredibly excited to be the official ambassadors of the Get Set to Eat Fresh programme, which has already had a huge impact on young people’s healthy eating habits around the country.”

Jonny Brownlee added:
“As athletes, we know how important diet, nutrition and being active is to living a healthy lifestyle and we strongly believe we can help support the ambitions of Aldi and Team GB as they look towards 2020.”

Since its inception, Get Set to Eat Fresh has reached more than 400,000 young people with more than 2,000 schools already signed up. By 2020, Get Set to Eat Fresh aims to reach 1.2 million young people aged 5-14 to improve their understanding of healthy eating and develop their ability to cook fresh and nutritious meals.

Following increased demand from schools, 2017 will see the programme expand its reach to include younger pupils aged 5-7 years-old, ensuring healthy eating habits are introduced at an earlier age. New activities supporting the Science, Geography and PSHE curricula are provided for primary age groups.

The Get Set to Eat Fresh website will also host video content providing insights into athlete nutrition as Team GB stars discuss their eating habits. Teachers will also be able access free, fun and engaging curriculum-linked resources about healthy eating.

Kicking off on February 2nd, the Brownlee brothers will visit young people in Guiseley to officially open the town’s new Aldi store, before heading to Yeadon Westfield Infant School While there, the Olympians will take part in an array of healthy-eating activities, including going head-to-head on a special ‘smoothie-cycle’ – a bike which uses pedal power to produce healthy smoothies.

Alistair and Jonny will join the likes of boxer Nicola Adams, modern pentathlete Samantha Murray, gymnast Dan Purvis and BMX racing cyclist Liam Phillips, who have already visited schools up and down the country as part of Get Set to Eat Fresh. One of the schools visited last year was Pye Bank CofE Primary School in Sheffield.
