Ten UTCS to open this September

University-sponsored technical colleges open across the UK, including first for the North East

Ten university technical colleges (UTCs) are to open this September, providing government-funded education for 14-19 year-olds in technical and scientific subjects to close the UK’s skills gap. 

Crewe Engineering and Design UTC

Crewe Engineering & Design UTC will specialise in engineering, manufacturing, and design, to the next generation of engineers and technicians, driving growth in the region’s key industries of automotive and rail. Crewe Engineering & Design UTC is working with key employer partners including Bentley, OSL Rail, and Jacobs with key educational support from Manchester Metropolitan University and local authority support from Cheshire East Council.  

Greater Peterborough UTC

The Greater Peterborough University Technical College (GPUTC) is the choice for engineers, builders, designers and architects of the future as a ‘bridge to work or university’. The new £10 million building will offer sector-leading facilities. 

London Design and Engineering (LDE) UTC

LDE UTC will offer personalised learning based on a challenging curriculum with clear progression into employment, higher education or apprenticeships. Subject specialisms will include engineering, Built Environment and Art and Design. 

Scarborough UTC 

Scarborough UTC is to specialise in Advanced Engineering and Design & Control, to create a sustainable pool of future talent for priority technology industries.

The UTC is supported by the University of Hull and is working in partnership with a range of local and national employers including Unison Ltd, McCain, Potash, Plaxtons, Dale Power Solutions, Atlas Ward and Scheider Electric.

South Bank Engineering UTC

The South Bank Engineering UTC students will stand out with the knowledge and skills to enhance future industrial practice. The sponsors will offer pathways for UTC graduates into higher education, higher apprenticeship or employment.

As lead sponsor, London South Bank University will work closely with the other co-sponsors to enlist a wider network of partners.

Global Academy UTC 

The Global Academy UTC in west London will provide young people with the skills they need to work within the broadcasting Industry. It will also give students hands-on experience in a wide range of subjects including Radio and TV Production, Broadcast Engineering, App development, Music Technology, Script Writing, Event Management, Web Development, Music Publishing and News Journalism. Students will integrate their academic study with practical learning, studying core GCSEs or A Levels alongside vocational and technical qualifications. 

UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park 

UTC Sheffield Olympic Legacy Park will support Human Sciences and Computing through a unique curriculum and a range of partners. One will combine a deep understanding of how the human body functions, across the whole spectrum from elite athletes to those from chronic conditions, and how technology can help it to perform better. The other will develop skills in the application of digital technologies in relevant and future looking industries, including the human science sector. 

UTC South Durham 

UTC South Durham will be the first University Technical College in the North East. It will specialise in advanced manufacturing and engineering, sectors that are vital to the future of the North East offering opportunities for highly skilled young people. It will be built on Aycliffe Business Park, a business area where over 10,000 people travel to work every day. 

The University of Sunderland, Hitachi Rail Europe and Gestamp Tallent are the founding members of UTC South Durham and are committed to offering fast track routes to students who are successful at the UTC. This includes enhanced offers for UTC students who go on to study at the university, guaranteed interviews with Hitachi Rail Europe and Gestamp Tallent if suitable positions are available and apprenticeship places for Gestamp Tallent exclusively for UTC students. 

UTC Warrington

University Technical College Warrington will open in the centre of Warrington Town Centre as part of the Stadium Quarter development. Specialising in engineering and energy, UTC Warrington is already supported by a number of employers including Sellafield Ltd, Amec Foster Wheeler, Atkins, Rolls Royce and Nuvia together with local SMEs. This partnership is further enhanced through the involvement of Manchester Metropolitan University as university sponsor and local partners, Warrington Borough Council, Warrington & Co and the Warrington Wolves Rugby League Club. 

WMG Academy for Young Engineers, Solihull 

The Solihull UTC has been created by a partnership between the WMG Academy for Young Engineers Trust, Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council, Jaguar Land Rover, National Grid, SCC, Balfour Beatty, Arup, Aero Engine Controls and more than 20 other local and national employers, Solihull College and local schools. 

The UTC will be led by businesses with a business-like vision and culture. Students will learn in a business context – creating, designing and doing and solving problems that employers face on a daily basis.
