Haywood Sixth Form Academy in Stoke-on-Trent has announced the expansion of its Work Based Learning team, with the appointment of two Sixth Form Work Based Competency Assessors.

Maggie Wallace joined the academy in March and has 40 years of working experience, 17 years of which have been in Health and Social Care in various roles across both public and private sectors within North Staffordshire. As such, she brings a wealth of professional knowledge and expertise to her new role at the academy.

Maggie said: “Working with apprentices in my previous roles inspired me to not only reach a new potential in my own career but I realised it would enable me to take on a role guiding students on their chosen career path and supporting them with positive life choices. Haywood is a fantastic place to work doing exactly this and I’m extremely proud to be a part of the Work Based Learning team.”

“I now have the privilege of attending the NHS University Hospitals of North Midlands as a visitor, assessing the progress of our workplace students who have gone on to gain apprenticeships very successfully, not only as Nursing Assistants but also in other areas such as clinics and administration,” continued Maggie. “I hope to be assigned other areas and businesses as soon as the new academic year begins to help other students gain their career choices.”

Sarah Andrews also joined the academy as a Sixth Form Work Based Competency Assessor in March. Sarah was previously a Senior Support Analyst at Knutsford based Barclays Technology Centre, where she was instrumental in devising and delivering training programmes to engage staff in learning and development.

Sarah said: “I am passionate about developing students into young adults who have those soft skills which make integration into the work force seamless. I am delighted to be part of the Work Based Learning team at Haywood and will ensure that our students gain the necessary support and guidance to fulfil their potential, wherever the future takes them.”

“I am really excited to be in a role where I am able to work alongside students and also work with our businesses to maintain and build strong links within the city,” concluded Sarah.

The Work Based Learning team at Haywood Sixth Form Academy work with business partners to develop a bespoke curriculum to support students in their transition from education to the workplace. Through the support which both Maggie and Sarah will offer, students can be provided with a structured role, through which they will access new experiences, develop work-related competencies, grow in confidence, flourish as an individual and become ready for the world of work.

Paula Fergusson, Senior Assistant Headteacher at Haywood Sixth Form Academy, said: “We are delighted to welcome both Maggie and Sarah to the Haywood Sixth Form Academy. They bring invaluable experience to the Work Based Learning team which will help unlock our students’ potential and enhance employability skills.”
