Work starts at NW college

One of Liverpool's oldest secondary schools is to get a new science block, sports complex and music suite

A new-build is beginning to take shape at St Francis Xavier’s College in Liverpool. It’s one of 12 schools receiving support from the city’s schools investment programme. One of the oldest secondary schools in Liverpool, it has been educating boys since 1842. The new development was designed by architects IBI Taylor Young and received planning permission last November.

The development comprises a new science block, sports complex and music suite as well as a refurbishment of the existing buildings and a new school entrance. The science block will dedicate each of its three floors to a specialism and each department will house two 90 sqm high-specification labs. These will deliver up to A-level in each discipline. The department has lift access to every floor, with wi-fi throughout the building.

The sports hall is designed so that sports can be played at club and regional level, including trampolining, five-a-side football, badminton, volley ball, netball, indoor cricket and athletics. The building is equipped with an electronic scoreboard and wi-fi connected to a plasma screen.

When the project is finished, the school will have a covered and floodlit multi-use games area (MUGA) as well as 26 acres of playing fields including a cricket square, four football pitches, a practice rugby pitch and access to a squash club on site. DDA-compliant changing and hygiene rooms, together with a fitness suite, will also be available to use.

A new music suite is also being built comprising two specialist classrooms, four practice rooms, a rehearsal room and a recording studio.

The building work, which is being carried out by Liverpool City Council’s partner Kier construction, is set to be completed by January 2016.
