Students take part in a healthy debate at the academy

A deeper understanding

The Nicholas Hamond Academy pupils learn and debate about refugee issues in special session

Pupils at The Nicholas Hamond Academy, part of Academy Transformation Trust, were given the opportunity to explore issues around refugees and immigrants in a recent learning session.

The day covered a wide range of topics aimed at pupils of all ages throughout the academy. Staff were keen to explore some of the issues reported daily in the news and to help deepen the pupils’ understanding of these issues.

Pupils were asked to write what they thought an immigrant and a refugee were - many struggled to answer this or had negative perceptions.

Sessions looked at the plight of refugees, discussing what a refugee is, how people become refugees and what can be done to support them. Resources were used from ‘Show Racism the Red Card’, a national campaign that uses top footballers to educate against racism. Pupils watched a film about a young refugee and were encouraged to think about what life was like for them.

The pupils also completed worksheets, considered life from a refugee's point of view and engaged in healthy debate around the subject.

In the evaluation of the day, many pupils said that they now had a better understanding of the plight of refugees and would look at the news stories from a more enlightened viewpoint as a result.

Vice Principal, Trudy Welham, said: “We always aim to challenge pupils and to expand their knowledge on a range of topics and current events.

“Our pupils took the day seriously and put a lot of thought into the sessions and the discussions.

“The day achieved our aims of helping pupils to think differently about this important issue.”
