Academy sector in numbers, May 2016

Since we last crunched the numbers in March, we've seen a huge increase in the number of schools in progress towards sponsorship, to open as academies from 2016, 2017 and beyond. The figure has risen from 132 in March to 255 in May, a leap of 93%.

Application approvals have also jump-started, with an impressive 371% increase from 31 in March to 146 in May. This is trend is likely to continue as the government push their ambitious 'every school an academy' plan. Interestingly, applications to convert have fallen 25% to 154.
