Bringing women together

Empowering women and encouraging them to go into school leadership is the theme of a conference to be held at a London prep school

Nicky Morgan, the secretary of state for education (and the minister for women and equalities) will open a new education conference, co-hosted at Newton Prep by headmistress Alison Fleming and the head of St George’s Primary in Nine Elms, Janet Hilary. Speakers include Shami Chakrabarti, the director of Liberty; Baroness Doreen Lawrence, mother of Stephen Lawrence, who campaigned tirelessly to win justice for her son; leading psychologist and author Dr Linda Papadopoulos and Bernice McCabe, headmistress of the North London Collegiate School and a leading light of the Prince’s Teaching Institute.

“I am convinced that women continue to limit themselves when it comes to taking on leadership positions,” said Alison Fleming, headmistress of the co-educational prep school in the heart of London. “My purpose is to get women together to share experiences, but most of all to help them to go away feeling empowered – believing that they too could be involved in school leadership.

“I am delighted to be hosting this conference with our close neighbours Jan Hilary and Sarah Collymore of St George’s Church of England Primary School. We aim to bring together women from schools in both independent and maintained sectors to share thoughts and ideas and, just maybe, to resolve together to influence London schools for good. I could not be more pleased that our very inspiring line-up of speakers are also excited by this opportunity. We intend that the atmosphere at the conference will be relaxed and unstuffy but with a powerful message.”

The ‘Empowering Women in Education and Leadership’ conference takes place at Newton Prep on Wed 18 March from 9.15am-2.45pm. See website for more details.
