DOYRMS performs at star-studded Sun Military Awards

Peter Andre grabs the baton to conduct Duke of York's Royal Military School band at 'Millies'

Students from the Duke of York’s Royal Military School (DOYRMS) in Dover had a surprise guest conductor as they performed at the recent Sun Military Awards, (“the Millies”), at the Guildhall, London.

As the School Military Band took position by the red carpet to perform to people leaving the star-studded event, Peter Andre took the baton from Director of Military Music David Cresswell and led the band for several minutes, much to the students’ and onlookers’ delight.

As well as playing music including Jubilee, The World in Union, Swing March, Time to Say Goodbye, Sons of the Brave and Georgia, the band members also formed a guard of honour to greet attendees on their way through to dinner at the beginning of the event.

High-profile guests included Rod Stewart, Penny Lancaster, Ian Wright, Susanna Reid, Gaby Roslin and Joey Essex as well as Defence Secretary Michael Fallon and Mayor of London Boris Johnson, many of whom stopped to chat to the students on the way through to the dinner, honouring the courage and fortitude of Britain’s Armed Forces.

Chris Russell, the school’s Executive Principal, said: “Many of our pupils have parents serving in the Armed Forces so the Milllies are always of great interest to our school community. Many celebrities stopped to remark on the excellent performance of the band and some were even spotted recording the music on their mobile phones.”
