Desborough College, an academy school in Maidenhead in Berkshire, has been nominated for best new building at the 2degrees Champions Awards.
The 2degrees Champions Awards were established to recognize the individuals and companies pushing the boundaries of sustainable business, as voted for by their peers.
Desborough College's zero-carbon drama studio, The Jacoby Studios, is nominated for the award. Voting is open from now until Monday 27 April.
The Jacoby Studios generate five times their own electricity needs. They have an A+ EPC rating, a negative carbon emissions rating, and are among the most environmentally sound and energy-efficient theatres in the country. They are also in the top three of the most energy-efficient school buildings in the UK.
The Jacoby Studios were designed and delivered in October 2014 by UK Energy Partners, the company which designs, finances and delivers zero-carbon school buildings under the name Schoolhaus. Schoolhaus generates energy and revenue for schools via design efficiencies and a solar PV roof.

Technical director of UK Energy Partners, Neil Smith, said: “We have now built nine of the ten most energy-efficient school buildings in the UK, with a radically energy-efficient design and a disruptively alternative delivery model, whereby we design, plan, construct and maintain these buildings at a fraction of the cost of traditional building services. We aim to at least double in size for the next few years as we take on the large, traditional builders with a new methodology – off-site manufacturing as a prelude to ultra-quick on-site construction – which will continue to drive down the cost of delivering super efficient, contemporary building solutions.”
