Stroud District Council approves proposals for SGS Berkeley Green UTC building, to open in 2017

Posted by Stephanie Broad | July 14, 2016 | Facilities & buildings

Stroud District Council has approved the building plans for new SGS Berkeley Green UTC, which will open in Gloucestershire Science and Technology Park in September 2017.

The UTC building will be a cutting-edge renovation of the park’s former nuclear laboratories, offering technical qualifications in advanced manufacturing and digital technologies, including cyber security, as part of the GCSE and A-level curriculum.

Students will have the opportunity to work on real projects with the UTC’s employer partners, developing their technical and practical skills in preparation for work, university or apprenticeship. Partners include Hewlett Packard and GCHQ, amongst others.

SGS Berkeley Green UTC will share a campus with South Gloucestershire and Stroud College and its new Green Skills Centre, providing students with access to additional state-of-the-art education, training, research and business facilities.

SGS College Principal and Chair of the UTC’s governing body, Sara-Jane Watkins, said: “SGS Berkeley Green UTC is an exciting development that will be an asset to the region.

Young people will have an opportunity to specialise in their chosen industry as well as gaining the GCSEs that they would do at secondary school with clear progression routes into employment, apprenticeships and higher education.”
