New resources from NASBM outline core values for school business managers

The National Association of School Business Management (NASBM) has launched a suite of professional standards for those already working, or aspiring to work, in school business management.

The standards take a four-tiered approach, to reflect the levels of contribution towards leadership. They are intended to support self-assessment, recruitment, performance management, organizational development and training.

Russell Hobby, general secretary of school leaders’ union NAHT said: “we welcome this framework for SBM professional standards, which will be helpful for both schools and SBMs.

“These standards go to show how far the SBM professional role has changed in the last five years, with SBMs working as senior leaders accountable for school business management, leaving heads free to focus on teaching and learning. As an association, we’ve seen the number of SBM members increase in recent years, playing a key role in our work as a school leaders’ union.

“The standards clearly set out the immense and valuable role played by SBMs in managing areas such as finance, human resources, premises management, procurement and IT. These standards will play a key role in supporting the professional development of SBMs, an integral part of the education landscape.”
