Lord Agnew visits Fairfield High School

Staff and pupils welcome top parliamentary decision maker

Lord Agnew, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the School System, was greeted yesterday by staff and students of Fairfield High School, part of the Excalibur Academies Trust (EAT). Lord Agnew spent time with EAT’s Chief Executive Dr Patrick Hazlewood, Fairfield's Executive Principal Catriona Mangham and Acting Principal Nick Lewis. He also met other members of the Senior Leadership Team and students including the Head Boy, Kafi, and the Head Girl, Ruby.

Lord Agnew’s remit includes academies and multi-academy trusts. FHS was delighted, then, to have the opportunity to introduce Lord Agnew to its over-subscribed academy with diverse student population - more than 40 flags hang in the school’s Atrium, representing the nationalities of its staff and students.

Lord Agnew’s successful career in most recent years has seen him take on the role of non-executive director at the Department of Education from 2010 to 2015, and Chair of the Academies Board from 2013 to 2015. Throughout this period, he has been closely involved with ministers, helping to drive forward improvements in the school system.

Nick Lewis, Acting Principal at FHS, commented: “We were privileged to welcome Lord Agnew to Fairfield. We are having quite simply an amazing year. The figures for this September tell us that we are absolutely the school of first choice for our local community, with a staggering 30% increase in first choice applications from previous years. With this in mind, we showed Lord Agnew what makes Fairfield so special, which is beyond excellent teaching and learning, an extraordinary mix of social skills, tolerance and acceptance of diversity.”
