Making a world of difference to teacher recruitment

A London principal is heading to Australia to find specialist teachers for his local borough

The UK may be experiencing teacher shortages, but the same does not apply the world over. In Australia, for example, there is a surplus. And that’s where a Romford principal will head later this month in a bid to attract qualified staff to the London Borough of Havering.

Stuart McLaughlin, the head of Bower Park Academy, is making the eight-day trip courtesy of recruitment and retention specialist SupplyDesk. Main scale primary teachers are top of his wish list, together with English, maths and science specialists for secondary schools.

Pre-vetted applicants - with a minimum of a Bachelor of Education degree – will be waiting to meet him, with successful candidates going forward to a Skype interview with the relevant school. Appointees will then have the option of living with local families to help assimilate into school and London life.

While filling a vacant post with a subject specialist is the main benefit of casting a recruitment net overseas, there are other significant pluses.

“When asked to identify the advantages of overseas recruitment, school leaders reported that international recruits brought different perspectives and experiences to school,” said Clare Othman, MD of SupplyDesk. In turn, she added, this “helped to diversify the staff profile, introduce new content and texts to subjects and broaden students’ horizons".
