Eric Wright Construction, part of the Eric Wright Group, is underway with a £4m design and build project for Khalsa Science Academy. Funded by the Education Funding Agency (EFA), the free school will provide accommodation for 420 primary school pupils.

The multi-phase project will see Khalsa Science Academy move from its temporary location within a converted sports centre on Chapeltown Road to a new 2,072m2 permanent residence at Lingfield Drive, Alwoodley. The project had previously been delayed due to a dispute over school places. The overall programme includes for the design, planning, asbestos removal, demolition, temporary accommodation and full build.

The school is intended to be a resource for the community, specialising in science and will include a special science laboratory.

Khalsa Science Academy places STEM and modern foreign languages at its core, in order to provide pupils with the technical curiosity and language skills required in the 21st century.

Palvinder Singh, Chair of Governors, said: “This is a historical moment giving us the opportunity to develop a school for the 21st Century. We are delighted to be working with Eric Wright and are making good progress to achieving our goal.”

John Wilson, managing director at Eric Wright Construction, added: “This is a great opportunity for the school to start afresh and create purpose-built premises that meet the exact needs of staff and pupils.

“It’s always a pleasure to be involved in a project from design stage through to completion and these state-of-the-art facilities will enhance the technical skills and learning opportunities for future generations.”
