Westbourne Olympic hopefuls Anton and Kerry

Olympic hopefuls inspire Westbourne Academy pupils

Two Westbourne Academy alumni share their experiences with year 10 assembly

Pupils at Westbourne Academy in Ipswich were encouraged to follow their dreams by two former pupils striving for glory at this summer’s Rio Olympics.

Siblings Anton and Kerry Dixon are on target to compete in Rio 2016 at the long jump and 400m hurdles. While taking a break from their intensive training schedules, Westbourne Academy welcomed them back last month when they delivered an assembly for year 10 pupils.

With their tagline ‘If your dreams don’t scare you they’re not big enough!’ both Anton and Kerry told students of their sporting journeys and of how their time at Westbourne gave them the opportunities to succeed and follow their dreams to become Olympic athletes.

Whilst at university in Canada, Anton and Kerry honed and perfected their athletics talents, enabling them to travel the world, competing at the highest level. Anton explained why he made the switch from basketball to athletics and how he came to be sponsored by international sportswear brand, Nike.

Now living back in Ipswich, Anton and Kerry have finished their respective degrees in journalism and media and their sights are firmly set on Rio.

Principal, Garry Trott, commented: “We are always pleased to welcome former pupils back to Westbourne.

“Anton and Kerry’s words and experiences were incredibly powerful.  They are two excellent examples to our current pupils of the benefits of hard work and dedication.

“I know that many of our young people will have been motivated to set ambitious goals for themselves and follow their dreams.

“Thank you to Anton and Kerry for visiting and all the best for Rio!”
