Redmoor Academy wins Low Energy Project of the Year

Leading construction professionals gathered at the prestigious Structural Timber Awards' ceremony

A Schoolhaus® building at Redmoor Academy, in Hinckley, Leicestershire, has won Low Energy Project of the Year at the 2017 Structural Timber Awards. It was the solar powered building’s fourth award this year.

On 10 October, leading construction professionals gathered at the prestigious Structural Timber Awards’ ceremony; hosted by compere Mark Durden-Smith at the National Conference Centre, Birmingham – “to celebrate the great, the good and the simply outstanding.”

With over 200 outstanding submissions, this year’s Structural Timber Award judges had an onerous job of selecting the winners.

The Low Energy Project of the Year category was hotly contested, but the Schoolhaus® at Redmoor academy scooped the trophy, beating the UK’s first ‘Next Generation’ Nando’s restaurant, the University of Warwick’s new flagship building, a three-storey state-of-the-art facility at The King’s CofE (VA) School, and the largest Passivhaus housing scheme in the country (sixty-eight) eco-homes!

With the heightened interest in offsite technology, combined with the abundance of outstanding projects, it was easy to see why the 2017 Structural Timber Awards surpassed all previous events in terms of the calibre of entries and attendance.

The head of the judging panel and Chief Executive of the Structural Timber Association, Andrew Carpenter said of the night: “The depth of expertise across all categories was impressive and the exceptional number of entries clearly demonstrates the upturn in the industry. The Structural Timber Awards is a high-point in the construction industry calendar and it is truly inspiring to see so much activity in the sector.”

Total surface area: 655m²
Annual solar PV yield: 32,680 kWh
Energy cost avoided per year: £5,293
Carbon emissions rating: -5.4 kg/m² per annum
