Case study: Hurstmere School creates much-needed space thanks to Canopies UK

Posted by Stephanie Broad | June 17, 2016 | Facilities & buildings

Hurstmere School is a well-established and respected school for boys based in Sidcup in Kent. A specialist Sports and Science Academy, Hurstmere provides enhanced sporting and educational opportunities to its students and members of the wider Bexley community.

Indoor space is becoming increasingly limited at Hurstmere, which led to the school’s Director of Studies enlisting the expertise of leading canopy manufacturer, Canopies UK, to install two canopy systems that would provide its Year 10 and 11 students with their own individual outdoor space.

Providing a bespoke canopy solution

As part of the brief, Canopies UK had to ensure that the canopies incorporated the school’s identity. Thanks to its extensive colour range, Canopies UK was able to offer red and white systems that complemented the existing building and fitted with the school’s overall branding.

From the start of the project, it was important for both the school and Canopies UK to be able to clearly visualise what the canopies. This was achieved with the help of Canopies UK’s in-house graphic designer, who superimposed an image onto photographs of the school building to demonstrate a true likeness of what the proposal would look like in reality. This really helped the school make its final decision choose Canopies UK to complete the work.

Canopies that are engineered for purpose

Canopies UK recommended installing two cantilevered Connekt canopies that would be fixed directly to the main school building using brackets. This approach was taken for two key reasons:

1. It would create the right amount of outdoor space that was required.

2. No space would be lost due to the installation, thanks to the fact cantilevered canopies do not require any front posts.

When it came to the installation, the school’s space restrictions meant that Canopies UK’s team had to work over a seating platform within the school’s Year 11 area. However, they were able to overcome overcame this challenge by using a specialist access platform.

A clear vision – from the outset

The canopies were installed within the agreed timescale, which was during the school holidays, instantly providing Hurstmere’s Year 10 and 11 students with valuable additional outdoor space. After the canopies had been installed, Canopies UK went above and beyond by revisiting the site to increase the height of the second canopy, at the school’s request.

Since the completion of this particular project, the school has contacted Canopies UK to help create even more additional space by installing a third canopy.
