HRH, The Duke of York, KG toured and formally opened Medway UTC this month, recognising it as an ‘excellent addition’ to the UK’s education provision. Lord Baker, founder of the Baker Dearing Educational Trust, joined the ceremony, along with the UTC’s employer partners, staff, students and local businesses.

The new UTC, specialising in engineering, construction and design, is backed by several key employer partners including Delphi Diesel Systems, BAE Systems, BAM Construction and Bouygues UK. These recognisable industry names have worked closely together to develop a cutting-edge curriculum involving technical projects for students and important work-related experiences.

During their first term, activities have included designing a cockpit for a fighter jet with BAE Systems, learning about AdBlue Injectors with Delphi Diesel Systems and visiting Redrow Homes’ construction sites to experience ‘real-life’ projects in action and develop practical skills in construction.

Support for further and higher education is provided by University of Greenwich and MidKent College.

After his tour, HRH, The Duke of York, KG said: “UTCs are an excellent addition to the education that is provided in this country; if we are going to be a prosperous country it is very important to invest in the skills of our young people. The changes in the last 15 years, in terms of technology, mean we are going to have to look at how we educate and how we give young people the skills they are going to need in the 21st Century. I believe that the UTC system is one of the better methods of creating these opportunities.

“I would like to congratulate Medway UTC for getting off to an excellent start in the short time that you have been in existence. I wish all of the students here every success and hope that this UTC goes from strength to strength.

Dr Karon Buck, Principal of Medway UTC, said: “Having the Duke of York officiate at our formal opening is a real accolade for everyone involved with Medway UTC. He is an advocate of technical education and a supporter of young people who aspire to be successful in engineering, construction and design; I am very grateful that he is giving his time in support of Medway UTC.”
