Top turnaround for Kent academy

Saxon Way Primary School rated a 'good' school and praised by Ofsted for its transformation

Saxon Way Primary School in Gillingham, Kent, a member of The Griffin Schools Trust (GST), has been rated as a ‘good’ school by Ofsted following a transformation of the school’s culture.

Back in 2012 the school was placed in special measures after Ofsted inspectors rated it as ‘inadequate’. But since becoming a member of the Griffin Schools Trust in 2013, the school has gone from strength to strength.

“We are all very proud of the school and its leaders for building long term improvement,” said Liz Lewis, Joint Chief Executive of GST. “It’s amazing what has been achieved in just two and a half years.

“It’s particularly pleasing to see that the inspectors noticed how much the Saxon pupils enjoy school and the positive relationships between the children and the staff.”

The Ofsted inspectors, who visited the school in June, had particular praise for the school’s leadership team who it described as “ambitious for every child in the school and (who) have created a culture of high expectations.

“Leaders and staff are relentless and have been successful in improving pupils’ behaviour and creating a safe, calm and purposeful school,” said the report.

“All adults show respect and warmth towards pupils and this has a positive impact on pupils’ personal and social development.”

A recent report rated the GST – a family of primary and secondary schools in the Midlands and the South East of England – among the top five out of 26 academy sponsors in terms of performance and the pace of school improvement.

The report from Angel Solutions, which provides online data for the education sector, assessed the performance of academy sponsors by comparing the grades of 700 academies before and after they were sponsored.
