The Raising Aspirations Careers Event offered high quality careers information, advice and guidance, and saw Year 9 students from 14 different schools take part.

Over the two-day event, students had access to keynote speakers including Bristol's Deputy Mayor, Cllr Asher Craig, and Steve Taylor, CEO of the Cabot Learning Federation. More than 60 companies and higher education organisations exhibited at the event.

The Royal Navy, Bristol City and Bristol Rovers FC, DAC Beachcroft, Burges Salmon, UWE, Rolls Royce, Airbus, and Avon and Somerset Police were some of the organisations taking part. There were also organisations on hand to talk to students about further education, university and post-16 opportunities. Over 100 civil service volunteers delivered employability skills workshops, led by Wendy Shambrook, to help students make the links between careers and employment.

The driving forces behind the event were Tim Holmes, Bristol Metropolitan Academy; Gill Carter, consultant for Bristol City Council; and the Cabot Learning Federation’s Central Team.

Tim Holmes, Advice and Guidance Leader, said: “Being inspired and having high aspirations are what this event is all about. Providing good quality information and opportunities to talk to employers, and hear about the many different pathways open to young people, continues to encourage the careers and employability agenda in schools.”
